Greece will celebrate the European Cultural Heritage Days initiative this year from September 27 to 29 under the theme: “European Heritage Days 2024: Routes, Networks, and Connections,”. Marking its 28th year, the European Cultural Heritage Days will feature events, exhibitions, workshops, performances, and guided tours that explore how heritage can contribute to a more sustainable future.
European Cultural Heritage Days 2024
This year’s celebration coincides with the 70th anniversary of the European Cultural Convention, signed in Paris in 1954, which aims to promote, support, and develop European culture. The 2024 theme highlights both tangible and intangible aspects of European heritage, with many events requiring physical attendance and others taking place virtually. The focus will be on communities, people, and nations that have developed connections and shared values, practices, and achievements over time.
Among the in-person events for the European Cultural Heritage Days 2024 are:
- intercultural tours of the baths of Aerides in the traditional Athenian neighborhood of Plaka
- happenings for children at the Athens Archaeological Museum as well as thematic tours for adults
- the presentation of a new metal and a guitar concert at Athens’ Numismatic Museum
- tours for adults at the Byzantine and Christian Museum in Athens as well as an educational program – games for teenagers
- a tour in the Museum of the Acropolis focusing on the beliefs of the ancient Greeks concerning health, hygiene, caring for the body and the soul
- at the Pavlos and Alexandra Kanellopoulou Museum, researchers and artists will explain how skills and trades “travelled” through time, overcoming geographical or other barriers
- the Jewish Museum of Greece will be offering tours to groups of adults and separately to families with children between the ages of 8 and 12.
- the National Gallery of Art will present speakers on the subject of the arts and crafts through the trade of the specialized artist
