Carnival is a children’s holiday and the Municipality of Athens invites children from 4 years old with their families to live for 15 days their own carnival story, to create, play and have fun, observing all the necessary protection measures for COVID19.
Apokries Carnival in Athens 2022 for Kids
The Organization of Culture, Sports and Youth of the Municipality of Athens (OPANDA), opens from February 16 to March 5 , all its cultural spaces, Museums, Art Gallery, Creative Learning Centers, Libraries, the Arts Center and the “Melina” Cultural Center, offering a variety of carnival creative programs and activities . Workshops of visual arts, music kinetics, storytelling, theatrical play, museum-educational programs, guided tours, children’s theater performances and karagiozi, promise to scatter countless children’s smiles!
At the same time, the exhibition ” Carnival icons of Old Athens”, at the Museum of Folk Art and Tradition “Angeliki Chatzimichali” sets the tone of old Athens.
Athens, that of the belle époque with the secular galas and the carnival dance parties in its mansions, but also the Athens of tradition with its own festivities, are revived through two different documentary images in the Museum of Folk Art and Tradition “Angeliki Hatzimichali”, transferring the color and aroma of the old beautiful capital.
Two different approaches to the carnival in Athens, circa 1900. The first image of a lady invited to a carnival dance is prepared, trying on toilets, furs, hats, feathers and of course masks, in order for her appearance to fit the luxury of the Athenian carnival “evening” δεύτερη The second representational approach is inspired by the work of Nikolaos Gyzis “The Carnival in Athens”. Somewhere, in an everyday house, a group of people celebrates Carnival with music and a happy mood. A family moment with a warm atmosphere, around a table and the space disturbed by the party. Men, women and children are entertained by the customs of Carnival, while the masquerades invade and frighten the little ones.
Exhibition curator, Stavroula Pisimisi, folklorist of the Museum of Folk Art and Tradition “Ag. Hatzimichali »
