Books about Roman Mythology played an important part in my life. As a young child, I remember sitting on my fathers’ lap listening to the most amazing stories. My love for his stories resulted in me travelling to Italy and studying Culture in my later life. Although I ended up in Greece, I still feel very close to Roman culture. And because I love reading mythology stories with my kids, I decided to research the myths of the Romans too. This post lists 10 of the best Roman Mythology Books for Kids.
Greek versus Roman Mythology
Did you know that Roman Mythology is very closely related to Greek Mythology? Roman Mythology was created almost 1000 years later, but it adopted the ideas of Greek mythology and “paraphrased” those ideas as their own.
Why read Roman Mythology with Kids
Mythology is an important part of any culture. It plays a large role in the rituals followed in society, and in the way your community thinks and functions. Culture is ultimately what defines our society, and what we stand for. In a world where our morals and values are challenged every day, a good grounding and understanding of what made us who we are can help our children stay strong.
Mythology (whether it is Greek or Roman) is full of stories about Gods and Goddesses, heroes and brave demi-gods. Kids will not only identify with the mythological characters but also dream of a fantasy world and understand human feelings and emotions better.
Ancient Rome
Kids like stories. And when it comes to history, they learn from stories, not from dense paragraphs about the phases of the Bronze Age, the location of trade routes, or the injustices of the social order here and there. So if you want to teach them more about Ancient Rome, Roman Mythology is the way!
